Lyndi Barrett is what one might call a girl about town. She’s friendly and outgoing, and will never forget your name once you’ve be introduced. Lyndi is also full of good ideas, which she is more than happy to share with me whenever we catch up. I decided to ask Lyndi a few questions about what it’s like to be a publicist. Read the interview below:
1. I know you wear many hats, but if you could narrow down a job title to describe your career what would that be?
I’m a publicist. I have a boutique public relations agency called Lj PR and we specialize in fashion, beauty and lifestyle PR. I run an online publication called Style Calling. We feature articles on fashion, beauty, trends and events from an industry insider’s prospective. I also teach at Blanche Macdonald in the fashion merchandising department. I teach the Fashion Show Production, Public Relations & Event Management courses.
2. How long have you been in the fashion industry?
I can’t believe it, but it has been almost 10 years!
3. What does a typical day look like for you?
The great thing about my job is that no two days are ever alike. I’m constantly working on different projects with various clients. My mornings are usually quite routine. I’m at my desk by 8:30am. I check my emails and various social media platforms and scan my favourite news websites. I usually spend mid morning answering emails, setting up appointment and doing all my daily tasks for Lj PR and Style Calling.
I think its important to have face time with all the people I email on a regular bases, so I set up coffee or lunch meetings two to three times a week.
A couple days in the week I’ll be at Blanche Macdonald teaching. I really enjoy this aspect of my work as it fuels me to inspire my students to pursuit their dream career.
4. You were recently in New York for fashion week what were some of the highlights?
New York is always amazing, but this February was particularly special since it was the last season at Lincoln Centre and the last season with Mercedes Benz as a title sponsor.
I had the opportunity to interview Rebecca Minkoff before her runway show for Style Calling. She is such a genuine and lovely person. It was a very memorable interview. The BCBG MAX AZRIA & Herve Leger shows were beautiful too. It’s always a treat to attend their shows. They also threw an incredible after party at The Standard Hotel. I had a dance party with Lubov Azria – it was amazing.
Banana Republic showcased for the first time at fashion week under the guidance of their new creative director, Marisa Webb. She has an incredible eye for design and is currently revitalizing the brand. The Fall 2015 collection was incredible. I can’t wait for it to hit stores!
5. What do you like most about your career?
The fact that I get to do what I love for a living is fantastic. I’m very passionate about my work and count myself lucky to work with so many talented people. Working in the fashion industry isn’t always easy, but if you love it and work hard, it is incredibly rewarding.
