The energy of the 1920’s was a welcome shift from the war torn previous years. The future looked bright and optimistic to those who embraced change and a more modern way of life. Social and economic advancements brought a spirit of renewal as consumerism ramped up, women voted and the Harlem Renaissance exploded in New York City.
The Flapper look of the era was not one adopted by the masses though it is perhaps the most recognizable. Heavily kohled eyes worn by celebrites like Clara Bow and Josephine Baker took influence from Egyptian King Tutenkhamun, who’s tomb was discovered in 1922. The ultra thin straight brows could only be achieved by tweezing out all the hairs. Pale matte skin and deep dark lips that emphasized the cupids bow were a must. Hair was worn short. Gone were the cascading locks of previous decades. Bob hair styles were sometimes straight, but for curls the somewhat intimidating perm machines of the time were very popular. Finger waves were a less harrowing procedure requiring only Mervin clips, and waving lotion to manipulate the hair into beautifully defined waves.
